Nestled in the picturesque French village of Scharrachbergheim-Irmstett, this town hall is a masterpiece designed by AL PEPE architects. With an area of 300 square meters, it's a contemporary yet harmonious addition to the village's landscape.
The Vision:
The architects aimed for a design that seamlessly integrates with the natural surroundings, opting for horizontality and transparency. The external wooden structure, with its regular framework, exudes a timeless aesthetic, reflecting the public nature of the building.
Materials and Inspiration:
The choice of materials is particularly intriguing. The dark pine tar coating gives the building a velvety appearance, reminiscent of the village's traditional colombages (half-timbered houses). The elegant wooden columns echo the site's trees, creating a beautiful connection between the architecture and its environment. Additionally, the corten steel expanded mesh cladding adds a unique texture, resembling a woven facade and paying homage to the local Vosges sandstone.

The New Town Hall is a perfect blend of contemporary design and local roots. It's rigorous in its structure but gentle in its impact, almost as if it has always been a part of the village's landscape.

The project was led by Aude Lecinski and Pascal Philbert, with the design team at AL PEPE architects bringing the concept to life. The engineering and consulting aspects were handled by Capem Ingenierie (structural), Solares Bauen (environmental sustainability), and C2BI (quantity surveying). Landscape architecture was entrusted to Françoise Maire.
