The battle against coastal erosion has led to a difficult decision in Maui, Hawaii. Eighteen coconut trees had to be removed from Baldwin Beach Park, a victim of nature's relentless forces.
Maui County officials explain that the trees, once a vibrant part of the park's landscape, gradually succumbed to the combined effects of coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion. These 18 trees were the closest to the shoreline, part of a larger group of 70 planted trees.
But here's where it gets controversial... While coconut trees are known for their resilience, even they have their limits. Over time, high tides and flooding exposed these trees to saltwater, a harsh environment that eventually led to their decline and death. The same fate befell the Baldwin Beach pavilion, which had to be removed due to similar damage.
Timothy Griffith, a tree expert and county arborist, sheds light on the situation. He explains that 50 coconut trees were spared because they were further inland, away from the direct impacts of the shoreline. Griffith emphasizes that while coconut trees can withstand saltwater, they are not immune to its effects, unlike mangrove trees.
And this is the part most people miss... Griffith highlights that the issue at Baldwin Beach Park is specific to the shoreline area, a consequence of climate change and salinization. He believes that if over-trimming were the cause, similar losses would be seen across the island.
Griffith also notes that county trees are pruned twice a year, adhering to industry standards. This proactive approach aims to maintain the health and longevity of the trees.
Patrick McCall, director of the Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation, shares his department's plans for the future. The Baldwin Beach Park Master Plan proposes moving the pavilion and new trees closer to Hana Highway, a strategic decision to protect them from shoreline impacts.
Additionally, the department plans to restore nearby dunes, creating a natural barrier to shield the remaining trees in the park.
According to the 2022 DPR Vulnerability and Adaptation Study, sea-level rise has caused the shoreline to recede by a quarter mile over the last century, a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against climate change.
